SPEAD Project
About SPEAD
Siaya Peasants’ Economic Advancement (SPEAD) Project
The project's objective is to achieve a sustainable increase in Food and Income availability for vulnerable target population. Working in partnership with the stakeholders, the project will employ a sustainable community-based farmer-to-farmer extension system. It will also aim to increase household income by commercializing small-scale agricultural production. SPEAD is expected to enhance the food and income security of 1,000 smallholder farmers in the target area.The project’s strategy is to: -
1. improve the agricultural production capacity of the peasant farmers in the community;
2. introduce and promote adoption of affordable and appropriate agricultural technologies;
3. introduce and promote small-scale cash crop production at the village level.
4. create market linkages and forward contracts for the farmers
5. Enable the farmers’ access to credit facilities
The project also addresses environmental degradation by encouraging cultivation of different crop varieties which assist in addressing the environmental degradation currently experienced in the area.
How we work
SPEAD works through intensive mobilization, voluntary and participatory bottom-up approach where the farmers identify and prioritize their needs at any particular time. CODE Initiative-Kenya works as a facilitator in the whole process. This has proven successful as there is complete ownership of the project and this makes it a win-win situation for both the farmer and CODE Initiative.
